Hand Hewn Beams

When trying to create a perfect rustic décor, hand-hewn beams are a necessity! Hand hewing can be found in older barns and homes and was typically done when sawmills were either not available or not a practical choice. The adzes and broadaxes typically used to shape these structural elements created textures that are a bit uneven and show diagonal axe marks every six to twelve inches. Most hewn beams are relatively square regardless of their overall size because the process of hand hewing started with a round log.
